Some will dismiss the Samsung Galaxy Tab as a huge oversized touchscreen phone, but while the similarities are obvious the huge 7" screen means that this device is invaluable for applications where a smartphone is too small and a laptop is just too big.

As a truly portable device that will fit in an (admittedly large) pocket, it is perfect for watching video and browsing the internet on the move. If, like me, you don't want to carry a laptop around with you, or it's inconvenient to do so, and need internet access regularly and find squinting at tiny letters on a small screen is just too much then this is for you.

Unlike the iPad you get full phone functionality using a regular sim card, which includes 3G videocalling, higher resolution screen, full multitasking (apparently the next version of the iPad will have more multitasking capabilities, ho hum - why wait?), the fantastic Android 2.2 FroYo operating system, 3.2 megapixel camera with LED Flash, video recording at 30 frames per second, 16:9 widescreen display (the natural way to watch video), stereo Bluetooth, Adobe Flash player 10.1, and a MicroSD card slot.

All this in a device that is much lighter at just 380 grams (something you will definately appreciate in a device you will be carrying around with you) and smaller thus easier to carry, and cheaper too!

Phone calls can be made using handsfree, headphones (+ built-in mic), full calling headset (included in the box) or via bluetooth headset.

The 7" WSVGA SuperAMOLED screen, displaying 1024 x600 pixels at 192 pixels per inch is just superb, while the very responsive capacitive touchscreen system makes it an absolute delight to use.

There are also four convenient buttons below the screen, Home, Back, Search and Menu, all of which use the same touch technology. The side of the device has the volume controls, power/lock button, and covered sim card and MicroSD card slots. The top edge features a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Stereo speakers feature on the bottom edge, next to a 30-pin connector which means this device can link up with HDMI devices, very useful as this is the ability to run 1080p Divx. An optional HDMI dock is available to buy in the accessories market, as well as a full sized plug-in keyboard.

Inside there's a 1GHz processor which means the Samsung Galaxy Tab is FAST, capable in fact of playing HD video perfectly. And with the Google Android market providing tens of thousands of apps, most of which are completely free, there is almost nothing you can't do with this tablet.
